Day 1 Vancouver to Alaska Cruise on the Norwegian Sun

I am on my flight to Vancouver. It’s such a beautiful day we are flying above the clouds. The flight has been slightly turbulent the whole way because of this but it’s not terrible When I left Ottawa it was 28 degrees but I am still wearing my jacket because I couldn’t fit it in my suitcase.
I am going to Vancouver because I got a free cruise. Well a free inside room I paid a lot to upgrade to a balcony so it was more like 50% off but still a good deal. Hotel prices in Vancouver are astronomical now it is actually cheaper to go on a cruise. I had a choice of any Norwegian cruises but right now I am hesitant to fly through the US. The only round trip cruise that doesn’t require flying through the US was Vancouver to Alaska. I had heard Alaska cruises are really good and I am okay going on a boat. I am going on the Norwegian sun which is an older ship and has been sold so this is the last round trip Vancouver Alaska sailing I didn’t want to give that opportunity up.
I have only been one cruise before and it was a short one from LA to Mexico. I went with my dad and I was very bored. The activities were not great and always had to wait to be in international waters for certain things to open. This was before the days of carrying phones around with you. The one thing I do remember enjoying was I was vegetarian at the time and the crew was from India so I told them to make me what they were eating and the food was really good. This will be my first time on a cruise as a vegan. Norwegian says they can’t provide vegan menus but if I talk to the chef they can modify vegetarian meals. I will report back on all the vegan food I find. I feel it’s going to be the same as Jamaica. I found there was a whole vegan section on the buffet by talking to the cooks no labels. I have learned that I have to give up my introvert ways to get the food I want I have to ask.I know Norwegian offers Indian food on their buffets so I’m looking forward to that.
You are probably wondering who I am going on a cruise with. It is an interesting story. I have a friend in Vancouver we did a trip in the summer to Quebec. She came to the event with me where I got the cruise voucher. I also often travel with my best friend. My friend that I went to Quebec with was going to come originally but because there is only one sailing date she had to take care of her daughter. My best friend likes to slave her life away working. She wanted to work all day and only come out for dinner. I told her I would research food not how to slave your life away on a cruise ship. I didn’t want to go on the cruise alone I love solo traveling but I need someone to keep me accountable getting on and off the ship.
I asked a few people knowing that most people will say no due to time or budget. Almost exactly ten years ago my dad was dying of cancer and I was supposed to go to Disney world with a friend from Edmonton. I still have the ticket but haven’t made it there yet. I have never travelled with this friend haven’t even seen her in years. That friend is coming. What a fitting tribute to my dad’s ten year passing. Although I travelled with both my parents a lot the cruise was the only trip we went on just the two of us. In the end my other friend worked it out so she is also coming on the cruise with her daughter.
This trip I won’t be spending much time in Vancouver. I only booked flights so I have 1 full day on each side of the cruise just incase of delays. My Vancouver trips are always jam packed so I’m looking forward to doing some relaxing on the ship. I only have 150 minutes of free wifi and I am looking forward to going back to the olden days where I spend time away from my phone on vacation. I did buy a new camera but the quality just doesn’t compare to my phone camera so I will still use my phone but I won’t be scrolling. We are beginning our descent to Vancouver so I will end here.
Thank you for reading. I am posting this while I am on the ship and don’t have a lot of data so I’m rushing.
