Started 2025 with a trip to Las Vegas

Image
It’s now December 31, 2025 Im drinking tea in an ice cream shop in Ottawa realizing I never finished this post. I drafted this post earlier in the year but it’s all still relevant.  The  way the world has changed in the last few months I feel like I need to explain that I went to Las Vegas in early 2025 because I knew things were going to change after January 20. I didn’t know how. I was expecting more violence and less direct flights. I never expected that things would change so quickly in a few months. It is now the beginning of March and it’s hard to keep up. Anyways flights and tourism to US destinations are already significantly reduced from Canada. I finished this trip knowing it would be awhile before I visited the US again and it was a pretty perfect trip for my memories and I am glad I took it.  I have been to Las Vegas many times you can read about some of my previous trips on this blog. I don’t think I have ever been in January. This time I was supposed to go w...

Another week of meal kits from Vegano

Image
My delivery usually comes at 10 am this time it came at 3pm so I was getting worried I wasn’t going to get the kit this week. I don’t buy groceries when I order meal kits because it’s enough food for me. I’m glad I got the kit.  This weeks menu items were limited because a new menu comes out next week. The meals I chose were not my favourite but I had a discount code and I love a deal.  The first meal I tried was a Moroccan eggplant tagine with couscous and a green pea and mint purĆ©e. The instructions said to cook the couscous for 5-6 minutes but I needed to cook mine for ten minutes. The tagine said to cook for ten minutes that might have been to long. The tagine had eggplant, onions, apricots, red peppers, chickpeas and a side of raisins. There was a lot of tomato paste flavour. The kit also came with some dried herbs to sprinkle on top. When I went to Morocco over 20 years ago every time I would ask for something vegetarian I either got a plate of prunes or an omelette. I e...

I tried more meal kits from Vegano

Vegano is the first company I have ordered a second meal kit from. I even have credits with other companies but I can’t find anything I like. It’s amazing I found a vegan company I like. The meal kit is $70 including delivery for 3 meals for two people. The price is good for what you get I usually get three or four big portions out of each kit even though they are meant to be two portions.  The first meal I made this week is grilled zucchini spaghetti it came with big pieces of grilled zucchini that the instructions say to put in the oven for 15 minutes. I cut the zucchini into pieces. The spaghetti was brown rice and the kit had cashew spinach dip, arugula, and a lemon vinaigrette. This one is easy to put together. It’s delicious I would order it again.  The second meal was an Indian butter cauliflower. This is meant to be a vegan version of butter chicken. It came with garlic naan and rice. I had leftover khichari which is rice and lentils. I didn’t cook the rice in the kit ...

I made meals from vegano meal kit

Image
The first meal I made was vegan braised cabbage udon noodles. The QR code for recipe instructions did not work but I was able to get instructions from the website. I never follow recipes exactly. I found the vegetable prep to be too much work. I would have rather has the vegetables chopped for me. They gave a quarter of a daikon said use a peeler to make ribbons that was to difficult for me I just chopped it. Some of the instructions were not clear so I made some mistakes. It turned out amazing though. It is definitely not something I would make myself and would be hard to find vegan in a restaurant. I got 3 portions from it so portions are big. I give this meal an 9/10.  Vegan Udon on Instagram The second meal I made was the vegan French onion Mac and cheese. I don’t use an oven and so I just made it in a pan. This was easy to prepare. I found it lacking taste even though I added more spices. When I reheated in the airfryer it tasted much better so it could be that I didn’t follow...

My experience with meal kits

Image
Meal kits are when you are sent a bag of ingredients and you cook your meal. My attitude has always been I like going to the grocery store and cooking everything myself or get a fully cooked meal from a restaurant. To me meal kits seemed to be an in between that isn’t for someone like me.  I like free things though so awhile ago I was given a free meal kit from a different company Good Food. It was okay I don’t follow recipes I didn’t use all the ingredients and the food was just okay. I did like that it is convenient if going on vacation or sick and can’t get to the grocery store so I kept the account its easy to keep the account and not buy anything.  When I was recovering from surgery I couldn’t get to the grocery store so I thought it would be perfect to try another company. This time I tried Hello Fresh. The food was extremely tasty but there were so many steps and so many dishes needed to make anything. I have changed to a vegan diet and they only offer the option of get...
